Water Conditions: Starting to Clear
12/20/2024
Starting to run a bit clear, but still great color and flow compared to what we were faced with all fall. Snow is still falling and will continue to throughout the day, so be careful if making a trip up. Cold temps this weekend could make fishing difficult, with the likelihood of slush forming. Keep in mind that steelhead tend to hold near the bottom in large, deep, slower moving pools when things get cold. Good luck!

Water Conditions: Perfect

Walnut displayed perfect flow and color yesterday. A combination of snow melt-off and light rain gave the water a nice green tint, which is exactly what you want to be fishing. Good color and flow should be maintained on all tributaries today as well. Chartreuse, orange, and pink colored beads, egg patterns, and egg sacs are excellent options for this time of year in conditions such as these.

Water Conditions: Good Flow and Color, Slushy
12/13/2024
In terms of flow and color, Walnut is looking good this morning. However, cold temps do have quite a bit of slush flowing downstream. Temps are not forecasted to reach above freezing today, so it may take a while for that slush to burn off. Laying an egg sac in between slush pockets will give you your best chance at hooking up today.

Water Conditions: Fishable now, but rising

A steady rain today and tomorrow coupled with snowmelt should have the tribs rising to a blown out level in the near future, even though they look fishable right now.

Gage was reading 20 cfs and dropping. Afternoon conditions were perfect. Waded below Whitemans Bridge and got into them pretty good. Yard eggs mostly. Sadly, I left my chest pack in the parking lot. Hoping for the kindness of a good-Samaritan, please reach out if you found it.

Late on this, but with some precious rain, streams came up and brought fish in. Father in law and myself caught fish on squirmy wormies, mop flies, and white death zonkers. https://youtu.be/udu1KOhVuYo?si=BqGfDK79Wn9a1iDP

The tribs are looking good today! Good color and excellent flow all around. Last week's rain was exactly what we needed to get things going again. Happy fishing all!

The tribs are up a hair from last night’s and this morning’s rain, but not much. More rain is in the forecast for the rest of today and tomorrow, but it may not be enough to have much of an impact. Hopefully it is, which would lead to good conditions later in the weekend. Keep an eye on the gauges and hope for the best!

Water Conditions: Low and Clear

It rained for most of the day yesterday, enough to bump flows a hair but not anything significant. Tribs are still low, clear, and leafy, but with a touch more flow than we’ve seen recently. It will be another weekend of low, clear, and tough steelheading conditions here in Erie.

Yesterday’s rain did do a bit to bump flows up and add a touch of color, but not much. It wasn’t the all day soaking rain we were hoping for and with the ground still as dry as it is, we’re going to need a lot of rain for a good blowout. Fishing conditions will still be quite challenging for the foreseeable future.

Lot of fish, even more drunken snaggers. Fish weren't eating anything and even less after they were fin hooked and abused with large splitshot and dragging hooks into or by them in drought water levels. Some young men running up the creek ahead of us through the center of holes put the icing on...hope the fish commission found these fools....

It certainly felt good to see some raindrops fall today, unfortunately it was not even close to enough to do anything to water levels. The tribs are still very low and clear. Let’s hope that what’s in the forecast is more significant.

Stream conditions are still brutal. Every tributary is extremely low, clear, and of above average water temp for this point in the season. The fish that are in the tributaries are very stressed out. Luckily, south winds today and tomorrow should make for a solid lakeshore bite as fish cruise up and down the beaches. These photos were taken today at Avonia Beach. Spoons, spinners, soft plastics, egg sacs, jigs, and minnows all work well for this bite.

Big winds today are blowing off the remainder of leaves on the trees, causing for a massive flow of them down Walnut this morning. There is very little flow, but a slight tanic stain to the deeper holes. The lake is incredibly rough thanks to near 30mph winds out of the west. It’s going to be another weekend of challenging conditions and very low and clear water.

We can’t remember a Halloween where the highs were near 80 degrees like they are today… Needless to say, steelhead fishing conditions are less than ideal. All the tribs are extremely low and clear, and the last few days of mid to high 70 degree temps haven’t done the bite any favors. As you can see in the photos, most of the fish in Trout Run don’t even have enough water to keep their backs covered. There’s some rain in the forecast for next week, fingers crossed it turns out to be more than what’s forecasted for right now…
